- Wood Sarods -

WOOD SAROD #1

2013

Built for Arnab Chakrabarty
(India) according to his
desire to have a traditional
Sarod built with European lute-making techniques.

WOOD SAROD #2

2014

A copy of WOOD SAROD #1,
73cm string length tuned
to SA = "B". Fingerboard
is brass, soundboard is
Canadian cedar, and body
is Indonesian meribou wood.

WOOD SAROD #3

2014

...similar to WOOD SAROD #1,
but with a 66cm string length
tuned to SA=C#. Fingerboard
is brass, soundboard is cedar,
and body is European walnut
wood. The short scale and high
tuning give a very bright and
clear tone.

LUTE SAROD #1

2014

Designed by Edward Powell and
Arnab Chakrabarti, this is a
very unique "wood sarod" in
that it has a SKIN TOP with an
ADJUSTABLE TENSION SYSTEM,
therefore the skin is easily and
gracefully made tight or loose
via a system of allen keys.

FLAT BACK WOOD SAROD #1

2014

Designed by Edward Powell
and Rick Henderson, with
Arnab Chakrabarti, this sarod
differs from previous wood
sarods in several ways:
1) the back is flat,
2) the soundboard width
is 34 CM as opposed to 30 CM,
3) there is a 5th (low PA)
playing string,
4) string scale length is 68CM
for playing in B or C,
5) AIR RES.MODE tuned to C#
6) this sarod is set up for
Ali Akbar Khan style playing
with a jawari bridge at the
nut, and typically wide string
spacings at nut and bridge.
7) 12 taraf strings instead
of 9.

LUTE SAROD #2 (left-handed)

2015

This sarod is a left-handed version of the Lute Sarod without the adjustable skin tensioning system. Essentially this is a Wood Sarod but with an Indian goat skin top. Built in Summer 2015 for Abhijit Nath (India).

WOOD SAROD #7 (left-handed)

2015

The interesting feature about
WOOD SAROD #7(other than
being another LEFTY) is that
the soundhole has been shifted
from the soundboard to the
side of the instrument. The
reason for doing this is to
increase the resonating area
of the soundboard and to give
the player more instrument volume.

Build in late 2015 for Shankar
Narayan who lives in Canada.

WOOD SAROD flat-back #2 (INDIAN SLIDE-GUITAR HYBRID)

2016

There are three very interesting
new features on this new Wood
Sarod. The most obvious and
dramatic is the ability of this
instrument to "morph" itself into
an INDIAN SLIDE GUITAR
(Mohan Veena) simply by swapping
the sarod nut for the much
taller slide guitar nut.

The next highly noteworthy new
feature is the addition of a jawari
bridge for the sympathetic strings.
This serves to forcefully accentuate
and amplify those strings.

The third new feature on this
instrument is a shorter string
length and higher tuning. The
string length is approx. 63.5CM
and the instrument responds
exceptionally well in
"D" and "C" tuning.

Build in the Summer of 2016 for
Jai Andrews who lives in Hawaii, USA.
